Finder & Recovery Rules

Licensing / Registration

Property finders must be licensed private investigators and register with the Dept. of State Treasurer; agreements are signed by the owner and the licensed PI, both notarized (N.C.G.S. §116B-78).

Fee Cap

20% cap for estate shares and special-proceeding surplus funds; for most other property the fee is capped at the lesser of 20% or $1,000 (§116B-78).

Waiting Period

Finder agreements operate under Treasurer registration and disclosure rules rather than a flat 24-month bar (§116B-78).

Governing Statute

N.C.G.S. Ch. 116B; finder agreements §116B-78 (verified June 2026).

Summaries marked “verify” have not been independently confirmed against the current statute text. Nothing here is legal advice — confirm rules with the state administrator or counsel before contacting claimants.
